Number 3 ~_ June 13, 1989 NEW BRIGHTON COMMUNITY CENTER NEEDS TO BE AIRED THURSDAY, JUNE 29th, 7:30. PM EDGEWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER The New Brighton Community Center Task Force will outline needs and seek community comments at that time and place. Looking at trends, program participation and other recreational facilities, the Task Force has projected needs fora community center which has these multi-purpose components: COMMUNITY SPACE o Social Hall o Kitchen o Meeting Rooms o Club Rooms o Education and Crafts o Games o Museum RECREATION SPACE o Gymnasium & Exhibition o Running Track o Exercise o Dance SERVICE SPACE o Delicatessen o Child & Adult Care o Travel Services o Health Information Special facility programs were also noted as meeting some needs depending on financing and support. A community swimming pool -and ice arena fall into this needs category. A proposed National Guard Headquarters Company armory would share gymnasium, class room, weight room, lecture hall, lockers, rifle range and kitchen on 300 days a year. To secure the proposed armory, the City would have to provide land at no cost to the Army and 12.50 to 20% of the construction cost (preliminarily estimated to be $6 million) depending on additional City facilities desired. The needs analysis will be forwarded to the City Council. The Council will decide whether or not to proceed to examine financial feasibility and select an appropriate location. TASR FORCE LOORS AT PRESENT AND FUTURE COMMUNITY CENTER NEEDS How do we know that 10 years from-now a community center will still be used? .Well, first of all you survey the citizens of New Brighton to see who would use such a facility right now, and then you look at demographics, participation characteristics and population trends to determine future use potential. The Task Force sent surveys to over 100 organizations active in the New Brighton area to determine what kinds of needs they have for a community center. An earlier survey of households was combined with population characteristics ~o define current demand.
