April 6, 1988 Park Board Minutes
4
John Johnson said the comprehensive park plan did not
envision a park in this location.. What role does this
play. Will the park be used for adults,. teenagers,
etc. Will there be a soccer field, or football field.
Sometimes irritation is developed among the residents.
Seward responded that the park will be developed at the
same time as the homes are going in. Do not think the
park. should be to the south, it will not be used. If
it is in the center, more people will be able to use
it.
Anderson told the Park Board he would like to see the
city retain the 3 1/2 acres and add an additional 1 1/2
to make it 5 acres for the park. Take the $40,000
remainder in cash from the park dedication. We would
have a 5 acre parcel that we would have developed at
moderate cost. Would like to see the park in the
center with play equipment, ball diamond, picnic area,
reforestation, and possibly a tennis court and hard
court area.
Ken Johnson felt tennis courts were a good idea because
the upper income people play tennis..
Carlson asked what percentage of (south location) park
will actually be usable; .will a lot of the park, be
cosmetic.
Anderson said if it is in the center it will all be
usable.
Carlson said if the park were to the south it might
provide screening and enhance the residential
development.
Anderson said that would be more of a Planning
Commission concern than Park Board.
Carlson said the Planning Commission would determine
whether people will buy these homes. If the park is to
the south where it is harder to get to, the homes may
not be easy to sell. The park would only be
aesthetically pleasing to those in that immediate area.
Ken Johnson said he prefers that the city take 6 acres
of park and not take any money at all.
Van Hatten asked Johnson if we need that much land.
Seward asked if all Anderson's questions had been
answered.
