Mr. Moriaty indicates that a
survey of the Long Lake Regional Park area showed a population of36 deer in the park and an
additional 17 downstream along Rice Creek. Mr. Moriarty indicates that the deer management
goal would be to reduce the deer herd to less than 14 deer. Elevated levels of deer herds lead to
increased car/deer crashes and damage to park and residential vegetation. The deer hunt would
be conducted using trained Archers and no firearms will be utilized.

Sgt. Terry Nelson has been assigned to work with and serve as a liaison to Ramsey County on
this deer hunt to ensure local input into the deer hunt. Details on the rules regarding the hunt and
a summary of deer hunts in other Ramsey County parks in 2006 is attached to the Council
Report.

R1d:~

Director of Public Safety

l:ICOUNCILIREPORTS\2007\Public SafetylLong Lake Reg;onal Deer Hunt.doc
