Of Re ort Number: 6
Wof Agenda Section: V
~j~ Report Date Jul 6th 2007
the city that works for you Council Meeting Date July 10th, 2007

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Approval of Public Works Teamsters Union Contract
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL:

CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this re ort j Comments attached

Recommendation: Approve the union ¢o Tact between the public works department and the
City of New Brighton.

Legislative History:
None

Financial Impact:
This contract stipulates a 3 % increase in wages for 2007 and 2008. The insurance contribution
for 20007 is $470 and $660 for single and family coverage respectively and $500 and $700 in
2008 for single and family coverage respectively. These amounts are consistent with City
practices in previous years.

Explanation:

This contract also includes injury on duty language that mirrors the police officers contract, but
sunsets with this contract. This language is not ideal from management's perspective and during
the life of this contract would like to work with the union on creating language that can hopefully
be used as a model in all union contracts. Recent changes to federal rules that govern commercial
driver's licenses (CDLs) make it easier for employees to loose their CDLs. This contract
provides accommodations for employees who lose their CDLs for medical reasons only for up to
60 days. Finally, recent IRS rule changes required changes to how employees contribute to
retirement savings plans. This contract contains language that addresses those rule changes.

JA,,F

Dean R.
