0 Volunteers in Public Safety (YIPS) <br />Comm. Woods provided the following information regarding VIPS: <br />n VIPS held their regular monthly meeting last week. <br />o VIPS prepared dinner for the monthly Fire Department meeting in May. They will do <br />this in July and August also. <br />d VIPS decorated and served the Volunteer Dinner. <br />o VIPS will participate in BART training; Basic Animal Rescue Training. <br />o VIPS have been trained for Project Lifesaver; they are waiting for the rest of the Fire <br />Department to get trained. The rest of the equipment is now in. <br />to VIPS helped staff the blood drive yesterday at the Public Safety Center; 33 pints of <br />blood were collected. They next blood drive is scheduled for September 5th o VIPS will assist with traffic control for the New Brighton Tri-atbalon. There are 250 <br />participants signed up this year which is a huge increase from last year. <br />Public Safe / Homeland Securi Update <br />Public Safety is now part of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) which 11iclud,;s officers <br />from Roseville, St. Anthony and now New Brighton. Officers Brian DeDominces, Burt <br />Emerson and Ed Sypniewski are the officers participating from N(:•? linghton. They will <br />attend SWAT training for one week in June. The TRT usually gets called out 2 or 3 <br />times a year. <br />is The Pharmaceutical First Response Distribution Exercise was completed a couple of <br />weeks ago. New Brighton is a home base for this type of response; our Public Safety <br />Center would serve as a distribution location to get out doses of pharmaceuticals. <br />Maplewood. Police Department and Hennepin County Medical Center are the other two <br />who also participated in this exercise. <br />The Emergency Operation Center (EOC) was host to the "Snowball III" exercise done by <br />the State of Minnesota and the Department of Health. Our building would be used to <br />help command and coordinate a response to a disaster. <br />Water patrol on I.ong Lake started Memorial Day weekend. Two Reserves were hired as <br />part-time temporary employees ;to staff the boat launch and patrol the lake. They will be <br />working from I I am - 7 pm on weekends and holidays. <br />Public Safety received 78 applications for the advertisement of the police officer position <br />open due to the retirement of Steve Bornus. We are two officers short with the departure <br />of Carla Cincotta a few months ago. From this group of applicants, 14 candidates will be <br />interviewed on June 11 and 12. We plan to hire one person out of this group. <br />Officer Mitch Singer started in CIS on June 12th; he is coming to CIS from his <br />assignment at Highview Middle School. Officer Ed Sypniewski will be assigned to <br />Highview Middle School the end of August.
