Beginning in April of 2004, New
Brighton residents and businesses will notice this charge on their quarterly utility bills.
The change in the City's financing of street lighting, which was formerly paid through property
taxes, is a result of cuts in aid from the state of Minnesota coupled with taxation levy caps
imposed by the legislature.
Under the new street light billing method, single and two family residential property will be
billed $4.63 per quarter ($18.52 per year) and all other property categories $13.89 per quarter
($55.56 per year).
The New Brighton street light system consists of 605 street lights leased from Xcel Energy and
two City owned systems on Silver Lake Road and Old Highway 8 south of 1-694. The annual
cost to operate the street lighting system is $133,000.
For more information on the new street light billing, contact the City of New Brighton
Engineering Department, 651-638-2050, or Utility Billing at (651) 638-2105.
