•
• The Brighton Village area was finally redeveloped, with a new fitness center, medical
clinic, and retail center. All spaces are occupied.
• Suggestions were made on addressing the Palmer Drive retail proposal.
• Dalco Enterprises completed an expansion project.
The EDC also advised on other initiatives related to development and redevelopment.
• Members strongly supported the expansion of communication efforts through the
electronic newsletter. The Northwest Quadrant was the first section to "go on-line" and
continues to be published monthly.
• Information was presented to the Commission on building permit activity levels in 2008
and previous years.
• Proposed changes to the sign ordinance were discussed.
• Efforts were begun to interview key businesses to communicate our awareness of their
importance and to assess their individual needs. Various members volunteered to
participate in these interviews, to be held the first quarter of 2009.
Commission members consider themselves part of the "team" to keep friends and neighbors
informed of City initiatives, along with Council members and staff. Accurate information
conveyed at these meetings has been passed along.
The Economic Development Commission was reduced from nine to seven members by Council
action during 2008. Three members were removed from office, leaving the membership one
short.
For the upcoming year, the EDC looks forward to maintaining an important role in guiding
development and redevelopment efforts, and to enhancing connections with our business
community. The exact nature of the Commission's role is somewhat uncertain, as the work of
the group has gradually evolved away from the role described in the by-laws. Members look
forward to working with the Council to defining the role to better fit the current business and
development needs of the City. The Commission also welcomes the appointment of a seventh
member in order to return to full strength.
Commission Chair Mark Nelson will make a short presentation at the meeting.
David W.
