Black announced that Veit is still working on the dump cleanup and is currently forty percent
done with the project; it will be completed much sooner than expected. The post office is
expected to move on Martin Luther King Day weekend, which will allow Veit to remove the
small amount of dump material in the corner of that property.
Nelson inquired whether the methane gas collection system would be done in the spring. Black
replied that the gas collection system would be put in place after the dump has been
reconfigured, since the barrier will have to be specially ordered for the exact shape and size of
the developments. Benke asked whether any surprises have been found in the dump. Black
replied that the only surprise has been that the water table is lower than expected, which may
increase the cost of the cleanup.
Other Developments
Black reported that staff is working on a questionnaire that will assess the needs of businesses
within the City. It is hoped that the questionnaire will expand the City's relationship with area
businesses and also make them aware of City services. The questionnaire should take no longer
than an hour to administer. Lesher suggested that open-ended questions are the best way to
prompt useful responses. Benke asked whether staff had talked with the Chamber's Business
Development Committee. Roche replied that the Chamber's committee is made up of ten cities,
which have identified a total of twenty-five to thirty businesses that they would survey. He
added that three to four Chamber cities are now conducting their own surveys or questionnaires.
Lesher added that she would volunteer to help with the business visits.
Larson reported that he attended AN Group's open house and met with the company's president,
. Lee Anderson. The company is very pleased with their new location and has made a
commitment to the area. They have told Larson that the company is willing to talk with any new
businesses interested in developing within the Northwest Quadrant,
Chamber Report
Roche reported that on Tuesday, January 131h at 5:00 the Chamber will be hosting its Legislative
Reception at the TPC in Blaine. This free event is jointly held by several area chambers. Nelson
asked whether the event is well attended. Roche replied that it is a well -attended event.
Other Business
Nelson reported that he will be attending the January 13th Council meeting to give a report to
summarize the commission's activities for the past year and to offer suggestions for the coming
year. Nelson said that he would be asking for a validation of the commission's role and that the
Council promptly fill the open position.
Sculthorp asked whether staff or any of the commissioners knew of any "shovel ready" projects
in the City or the area. Larson replied that he was in Washington, DC last March and discussed
the 35W reconstruction. While that project is not slated until 2030, it would be ready if any
Federal funds should move the project up the priority list.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 7:49 a.m.
0
