I

MINNESOTA TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM INC

Please Reply To:
5818 Knox Avenue S
Minneapolis, MN 55419
925-4806

Mr James Senden, Mayor
Mr Robert Benke, Council Member
Mr Roger Blomquist "
Ms Jeanette Janecek "
Mr Steve Sclunidt "
City of New Brighton
803 5th Avenue NW
New Brighton, MN 55112

Dear Mayor and Council Members:

I

I want to extend the museum's thanks to you and the City staff for your
most excellent support and cooperation in making the July 4th "New Brighton
Special" such a fantastic success. We could not have staged this event
without your help and that of the New Brighton Historical Society, the
New Brighton Jaycees, Mr Dick Bury of Midwest Asphalt corporation, and
Mr and Mrs Kermit Hedman.

We are particularly grateful for the opportunity to test our rolling
stock and our members at such events. This was our very first such effort,
and we are as pleased as we hope you are with it. Our greatest problems
were that it was not a four-day weekend and we did not have enough coaches
to carry the loads. We estimate that 9,200 people rode the train, and
that perhaps 1,000 could not be carried.

We appreciate the generosity of the Minnesota Transfer Railway Company for
making its line available, and of its employees who donated their time.
It is highly unusual for a railroad in this part of the country to make
such a gesture, although it is not the first time that the company has
done it. Back in 1963, the Transfer allowed us to operate our streetcar
on its tracks, an event so popularly received that our Lake Harriet Trolley
exhibit was born from it.

Again, our thanks for your support.

Yours sincerely,

&:U~

I

William J Graham
President, MTM

cc: Gayle Bromander
Mark Anderson
Jim Lehn
