I

I

I

13 November 1979

~1

New Brighton City Council
New Brighton, Minnesota

Dear Sirs:

REF: North-South stop Sign on
Oakwood Dr and 3rd St. S.W. (See Diagram)

Several residents of this area would like the City Council to consider
removal of the North-South OakWood Drive and 3rd st. S.W. STOP sign.

the
N
~
II
O~
0
STOP

These signswere installed two years ago at the
request of residents who at that time believed
they would make it safer for children attending
Silver Oak and using the playground-park.

They should be removed at this time for the following
Re asons .

~()p
o

1. Silver Oak is closed thereby greatly
decreasing pedestrian traffic at that
point.

2. The placement of signs at that point
has never increased pedestrian safety
during the winter because of the lay
of the road. Maintenance crews find
it difficult to keep up.

(a) Southbound is blacktop and downhill. A few cars stopping in the
area cause glare ice at that point and make a complete controlled
stop difficult to impossible.

(b) The same happens going northbound. However, this is the start of a
rather steep incline and getting up the hill becomes difficult to
impossible unless a rolling stop is executed.

(c) The 90 degree turn off Oakwood to Silver Lane and vice versa
prevents this area. from becoming a speed way of any type as anyone
who uses Qr is familiar with this route will testify.

(d) The travel, traffic and present usage of this road do not qualify it
as a four-way stop area with all its associated winter maintenance problems.

If because there may still be a park Walkway at his point caution is deemed
necessary there should be instead a North-South Pedestrian Caution sign and
street marking.

StlveR ).Jf\Ne

Sdve~
OAK p~o pe.e.T~

acquel" e V.
