Page 3
Mr. Grand Fernelius
Corrective Actions
Upon identification of the odors originating from the Bell facility, Bell has instituted the
corrective actions listed below.
• Ceased shipments of additional DT -40 to Bell and reverted back to the previous treating
solution.
• Began adding carrier oil to work tanks to the maximum extent to dilute the solution.
• Ensured wood treating building doors and vents are closed when not needed.
• Increased/ replaced carbon in side vent air filters and hood vent filter.
• Conducted discussions with KMG on why solution was different than samples tested.
• Conducted organic and odor monitoring across the Site to monitor the progress of corrective
actions.
The organic and odor testing being conducted indicates that odors from the site are decreasing.
We expect this trend to continue until the DT -40 solution is worked out of the system.
Regardless, Bell is evaluating modifications to its current product quality control system to
minirmze the potential for future product delivery upsets to impact emissions from the Facility.
It is unfortunate our substantial efforts to identify an odorous treating solution beforehand did
not consider a manufacturer providing us unrepresentative samples and information.
Relative to availability for a meeting with our staff and your staff, we can be available this
Thursday and generally next week. Potential participants might be Dave Imholte (BLP), Shawn
Horn (CRA), and Daryle Thingvold (consultant) and possibly Rick Bleskey, if we meet next
week.
I leave for Spring Break on Friday and return on the 25th of March.
I hope this summary if helpful and speaks to your concerns.
Sincerely,
BELL L ER & POLE COMPANY
Thomas R.
