April 28 , 2009 Page 4 of 5 <br />they have worked very well for pedestrians and bicyclists. <br />Motion by Councilmember Phillips, seconded by Mayor Larson to endorse a solution that includes <br />temporary sigpalization at 35W & 96 intersection with possible improvements at Highway 96 at Old <br />Highway 8 and defer to the Arden Hills position for the section that affects them the most. <br />There was discussion related to roundabouts, bicycle traffic and pedestrian usage. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays, Motion Carried <br />Commission Liaison Reports, Announcements and Updates <br />City Manager -Dean Lotter <br />City Manager Lotter reported he has met with one of the three unions; with the other two forthcoming to <br />discuss the idea of furloughs. The fust discussion with the unions went "very well." Also discussions will be <br />occurring with employees to discuss early retirement options. The scheduled workession for May 5, 2009, " <br />maybe moved to May 4, 2009. The City did obtain some tax exempt language in the omnibus tax bill:. <br />Councilmember Mary Bury --Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission <br />Councilmember Burg attended a Town Hall meeting at Freedom Park with Representative Kate Knuth and <br />County Commissioner Jan Parker. The North Suburban Cable Commission volunteer appreciation dinner <br />was attended. The New Brighton Area Historical Society honored the City of Mounds View for celebrating <br />their 50 year anniversary. The North Suburban Cable Commission scholarship program awarded 16 <br />scholarships. Gratitude was expressed to the Public Safety Department for their assistance in the open <br />houses at the two local greenhouses. Councilmember Burg wished Mayor Larson a Happy Birthday. <br />Councilmember David Philk*-Planning Commission <br />Councilmember Phillips attended The recent Planning Commission meeting, a minor ordinance change was <br />addressed at this evening Council meeting to facilitate the Mission Foods project. <br />Councilmember Sharon I)offinPublic Safe Commission <br />Several Police Explorers participated in a Statewide Explorer Conference and competition. The Explorers, <br />led by Officer Kathy McNeely, did a great job. A team that included Brian Crocker (who is also a <br />Firefighter), Kyle Eaton and Andrew From took first place in the Arrest and Search Team competition! <br />On April 15th the Open House for Sharmw Lifting Products on County Road E2 was attended. On April <br />17th Councihnember`Doffing met with one of our leaders in the Faith Community, Pastor Peter Schultz of <br />Hope Community Church on Long Lake Rd. He wanted to know more about New Brighton and ways his <br />congregation can serve in our community. On April 18th the annual Firefighter appreciation dinner was <br />held, Firefighter Jeff Budnick was recognized as the Firefighter of the Year. Firefighter Budnick is also a <br />member of the City of New Brighton Public Works Department. On April 19th Councilmember Doffing <br />attended the MN Chapter of MN Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) held at our Public Safety Center. <br />MN COPS are committed to helping the surviving families of law enforcement officers who have paid the <br />ultimate price. On Monday, April 20 the City Council quarterly meeting was held, where solutions to the <br />2009 budget shortfalls were discussed; The Civil Services Commission also met during that evening and our <br />newest Civil Services member Cindy Ketola stopped by to meet the council. The Planning Commission <br />meeting was held on April 21 ", our new Planning Commissioner Jim Alvey was welcomed.
