Particular emphasis will be placed on the east side dump
closure. In addition, staff will be seeking direction from the City Council on three other
project related issues; namely: 1) potential relocation of a Qwest fiber optic cable; 2)
clean-up activities on the western segment of the Butcher's Spur; and 3) clean-up
activities on the former Ferrellgas site. The following memo summarizes each of these
issues.
East Side Dump Closure
The East Side Dump Closure is moving along nicely. The contractor will have all of the
liner installed by the end of next week. The remaining work involves importing granular
soils to place over the liner to build a 4 -foot clean cover, installing final utilities in the
roadway corridor, and creating the central park pond. It appears that we will meet the
October 1, 2009 project completion deadline.
On a positive note, all of the major dump excavation has been completed and we were
able to consolidate the material on-site avoiding costly off-site removal charges. To
date we have less than $70,000 of change orders on a $5,150,000 project which is less
than 2 percent of the project total.
Staff will present an update of the project at the work session and be available to
answer any questions.
Qwest Fiber Optic Relocation
As part of the re -alignment of 14th Street NW, Qwest notified the City that it has several
buried cables located within the old right-of-way. The attached map shows the location
M of these utilities. Qwest has indicated that if the cables must be moved, the City will
need to cover the cost, which is estimated at $60,573.
