City of New Brighton
Study Group on Temporary Signs
Introduction
The City of New Brighton regulates the use and display of most signage within the
community. For example, the City regulates the location and size of permanent signs on
commercial buildings. In addition, the City also regulates temporary signs, which
generally consists of any sign not permanently affixed to a building or wall and includes
sandwich boards, banners, freestanding readerboards, streamers, etc.
In recent years, there has been more and more interest in the issue of temporary signs.
Public opinion on the issue is wide ranging; some believe the City should change its
standards to be less restrictive; while others argue that existing regulations are adequate.
The City is interested in hearing from a variety of stakeholders before making any
decisions on regulatory changes.
Study Group
The City Council plans to form a special Study Group on Temporary Signs (Study
Group) later this summer. The purpose of this group is to review current regulations on
the use of temporary signs, determine if changes should be made to those regulations, and
. outline what those changes might consist of. The group may also make recommendations
to the City Council regarding other, non -temporary sign related issues should it become
necessary.
Scope of Work
The Study Group would meet once per month for a period no longer than one year. The
duration of the monthly meetings is expected not to exceed two hours, with the date/time
to be determined once group members are chosen. The City Council is seeking
applications from both New Brighton residents and business owners to serve on the Study
Group.
Application Process
Anyone interested in serving should submit a complete application by July 31, 2009. The
City Council will consider the applications and appoint a seven member group sometime
in August. The Study Group would start work in September and receive a packet of
briefing materials in advance of the first meeting.
More Information
For more information or an application, please call the City at 651-638-2100 or visit our
website at www.newbrightomun.gov.
0
