Skate Park Update—Officer Hamdorf/Public Comments
Officer Hamdorf called Jake, Brandon and Tony up with him. Hamdorf stated he ran the
numbers on phones calls. In 2008 we had 51 calls between April and Oct. 11. This year we are at
23. There hasn't been a call up there since the end of September. That is a reduction of about
55%. Hamdorf feels the call types are changing, they are more the nuisance and quality of life
types of calls. Everything is going fantastic. The youth have done a good job and the neighbors
have done a good job in taking back their park. Brandon will be one of the leaders next year.
Brandon stated there have been drugs in the park but after the program started he has not seen
any of that. It has been about 1 year. Park users are calling if they see any undesirable activity in
the park.
Frischman stated that when the program first started some felt there was too much responsibility
on the youth leaders. She hopes they did not get burned out. Hamdorf mentioned that the
previous leaders have so many other things they are involved in that they were not able to keep
up with everything. He did not think it was burn out. The two new leaders are freshman and they
hope to keep them on for a few years. Sixty one different people have attended the neighborhood
meetings.Frischman inquired of the youth if they felt they had support from peers and
neighbors. They responded that they do feel the support. They also expressed that the skate park
and pavilion area has been cleaned up and if there is garbage, the skateboarders will pick it up
and take care of it. Younger kids are showing up and now feel safe at the park.
Samuelson applauded the youth in their efforts and future thinking and thanked them very much
for their efforts.
Harreld also thanked them and said the younger kids really have them to look up to.
Meyer asked if younger kids and families are now coming to the park. The youth all answered
yes, there are more and more young kids and families coming to the park. Meyer complimented
