•
•
iew
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Mounds View Public Schools
March 17, 2010
Grant M. Wyffels, P.E.
Director of Public Works
803 Old Highway 8 NW
New Brighton, MN 55112
Dear Grant Wyffels,
The city of New Brighton has always been very supportive of Highview and
provided assistance with traffic control whenever it was necessary. My purpose
in writing you today is to request additional support to ensure the safety of our
students. Please strongly consider installing flashing crosswalk lights on 7th
Street across from Highview Middle School. I have been a staff member at
Highview for 10 years (Y2 time as a teacher and Y2 time as an administrator.)
During my time here I have heard numerous parents express concern for the
safety of their children crossing 7th street when school lets out. I have also
witnessed too many "close calls" with students in the crosswalk, almost being hit
by cars. I have also, on many occasions, gone on the PA system at school to
remind our students to watch for cars before they cross 7th street. Without much
success, we still have students running across and cars speeding by almost
hitting our students. You might think this adolescent age is capable of monitoring
traffic when crossing a street but teens' brains are not fully developed at this age
so they often times make quick decisions without thinking through the
consequences until after the fact. I'd hate to see it take one of my middle school
students hit by a car for the city of New Brighton to consider this imperative
safety request.
Heather Timmons
Principal- Highview Middle School
2300 7th Street NW ■ New Brighton, MN 55112-6525 0 651-621-6700 phone 0 651-621-6705 fax 0 www.moundsviewschools.org/highview
