competitive in maintaining and recruiting good professional employees and ensuring <br />that our compensation plan is competitive with the market. <br />Overview of the Local Government Pay Equity Act - <br />The City's current compensation plan is also a very valuable tool in assisting the City in <br />complying with the States Pay Equity law. The 1984 Local Government Pay Equity Act <br />requires that the City of New Brighton and other municipalities file a pay equity report <br />with the State of Minnesota. The law was instituted to eliminate any sex -based wage <br />inequities in compensation for local governments. Per the Local Government Pay Equity <br />Act, the City of New Brighton is required to submit a report to the State of Minnesota <br />every three or four years. The City of New Brighton submitted its latest pay equity report <br />in January of 2010 for the 2009 calendar year. Due in large part to the City's current <br />compensation plan, the City has been able to execute its plan in a consistent manner that <br />is unbiased and avoids the potential problems of over -evaluating or under -evaluating a <br />position. The City of New Brighton received notification from the State of Minnesota on <br />April 29, 2010, that the City's existing compensation pay plan is in compliance with the <br />Local Government Pay Equity standards. <br />To assist with the Work Session discussion, City staff has attached a copy of the City's <br />2010 Non -Union compensation pay plan, 2010 Union compensation pay plan, and the <br />compensation grade level sheet. <br />
