He has not <br />heard of this ever happening <br />o Brian stated he is a resource and can help put together a <br />management plan. Has worked for both federal and state <br />governments. Started out trying to help the goose that was once <br />endangered <br />o History of geese was given <br />o In 1980s started getting complaints of geese overpopulation, <br />Lake of the Isles <br />o In early 1990's about 8,000 birds were involved in the roundup <br />o Even when birds were shipped out of state they would show up <br />back here. <br />o Canada Goose Management was sued by an animal rights <br />organization, but it was overturned in court. Strict policies on <br />bird handling were put into place and Canada Goose <br />Management, Inc. passed each of those new criteria. <br />o Tom Keefe started this company in 2008. <br />o The current goose population is about 18,000 in the metro area. <br />o Goose control starts in June and runs through the 3`d week in <br />July <br />o Adult birds are processed and most given to Second Harvest <br />Food Shelf <br />0 2,600 to 2,700 geese are removed from Minnesota in a year <br />from about 100 sites <br />o When contacted about goose problems, we recommend the <br />removal program or habitat modification <br />o Geese are removed for three years to be certain, all nesting <br />birds have been removed <br />o Do work with the Department of Agriculture <br />• John Hadidian from Maryland, Humane Society of U.S. Headquarters <br />o With the HSUS for 15 years. All of his career has been in <br />urban wildlife <br />o Howard Goldman, their State Director asked him to come <br />o Lots of people from Seattle to Boston are experiencing the <br />things you are with geese <br />o In 1996 in Michigan, the Supervisor of the DNR sat all <br />different entities together from animal rights advocates, to <br />sporting community (hunters) and Humane Society. He <br />understood they differed in their views but wanted to focus on <br />the things they agreed upon. The first thing was that geese are <br />valued; important. In Michigan the solution was to hunt them.
