0;..citYOf Report Number 11-025
A NEW Agenda Section VI-4
BRIGHTON Council Meeting Date January 25,2011
the city that works for you
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Approval of Joint Powers Agreement for Purchase of Firefighter
Personal Protective Equipment .
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: Robert J. Jacobson, Director of Public Safety
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
91No comments to supplement this report Comments attached
Recommendation:
Approval of the Joint Powers Agreement for Purchase of Firefighter Personal Protective
Equipment.
Legislative History:
The initial parties to this Agreement were the cities of Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Eden
Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Saint Louis Park, and Minnetonka. In September 2010, the City of
Minnetonka issued a request for bids to purchase structural firefighting protective clothing.
Financial Impact:
The New Brighton Department of Public Safety Fire Division will use existing operational
budget monies and the recently awarded 2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program federal
funding to purchase the new firefighter personal protective equipment. Historically, the
department has paid about $2,000 for a set of turnout gear; the product offered through the JPA
is of better construction and offers introductory pricing of$1,630.20 during the first quarter of
2011. The JPA also offers five-year contract pricing on the equipment.
Explanation:
The Fire Division evaluated several manufacturers of firefighter personal protective equipment
and found that the turnout gear offered by Honeywell/ Morning Pride through the existing Joint
Powers Agreement best met the needs of the department in terms of cost and materials.
((iji.....,,
,y4,47)_ .\"4
Anthony S.
