Jacobson, Director of Public Safety i d7 <br /> .79 -1 <br /> CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL: <br /> No comments to supplement this report Comments attached <br /> Recommendation: <br /> Staff recommends acceptance of the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant in the <br /> amount of$7,500. <br /> Legislative History: <br /> The Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant program is intended to <br /> provide financial and technical assistance as well as national direction and guidance to enhance <br /> local hazardous materials emergency planning and training. The HMEP Grant Program <br /> distributes fees collected from shippers and carriers of hazardous materials to emergency <br /> responders for hazmat training and to Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) for <br /> hazmat planning and training. The program is administered by the United Stated Department of <br /> Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration <br /> Financial Impact: <br /> The total cost of the hazardous materials response tank truck training will be $8,699.00 of which <br /> $7,500 is offset through the approval of the HMEP grant. The additional cost of$1,199 will be <br /> funded through class registrations fees of course attendees. <br /> Explanation: <br /> According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration there are 16,341 registered <br /> carriers in Minnesota transporting dangerous chemicals ranging from gasoline to ammonia <br /> through the State with each tank truck on the roadway is a potential threat to the safety of the <br /> public.
