There was concern that if you do improvement to the Poppyseed trail into the park,
you will attract more people. Currently you can only have about 3 cars there. Are
there any plans to create more parking in that area?
Scott Yonke said we haven't really looked at that at this time. There may be a chance
we could do some kind of trail head in that area.
Frischman wanted to make sure there was some priority given to that Poppyseed
neighborhood; a trail head or something like that. So that having a nice trail there
doesn't disrupt the tranquility of that nice neighborhood.
Signage was mentioned. Scott Yonke said he would not suggest any signs yet. We are
in the process of submitting the application. We do not know if we will be chosen yet.
The Poppyseed area is not in our formalized trail system. Many of the people that use
that have created that trail themselves. So signage cannot really be put there until we
are closer to design and construction.
Frischman asked if Scott Yonke could come back after the approval and we could
express our wishes as we move forward. Scott agreed. Once the application is
submitted it goes through a scoring process which can take several months. If the
County is selected, the money will not be available until 2015.
The Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission directed Director Breuer to
write a letter of support.
VI. Announcements
A. Council Report—Council Member Phillips
Council had a budget update at the last meeting. We will be focusing on
the non-fleet items. There was a heated discussion regarding the Viking
Stadium. Planning Commission is updating the zoning codes. There was a
ground breaking for the View Apartments in the Exchange Development.
B. Chair Updates
Frischman mentioned there was a park tour in October, 2007. It helps to
visit each park so that decisions are easier having seen them. We have
chosen September 7 to have the tour. It is time consuming but very worth
it. Last time we started at 4:30 p.m. We will discuss where we will meet at
the August meeting.
C. Department Happenings/upcoming events
Breuer stated July is National Recreation and Parks month. Jr. Golf league
has 214 enrolled; these are our future players. We are seeing an increase at
our neighborhood center rentals January through May. Most of them are
birthday party rentals, graduations and family reunions. About 1,100 kids
are participating in our programs this month. This doesn't count seniors in
this building, senior trips, and things happening in this building such as
fitness. There are 40 kids in our Ed-Venture program.
-6-
