Public Safety Commission <br /> May 25, 2011 <br /> Attending: Commissioner Allen, Commissioner Benke, Commissioner <br /> Bredenbeck, Commissioner Donohue, Commissioner Hollimon, <br /> Commissioner Kroll, Commissioner Lamp, Commissioner <br /> Schumann, Commissioner Woods, Council Member Burg, <br /> Director Jacobson <br /> Citizens: Long Nguyen, Ory Kraus (Civil Service Commissioner), Terry <br /> Post, Jim Woods <br /> Absent: None <br /> Roll Call/Call to Order <br /> Commissioner Allen called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm. Members introduced <br /> themselves to include new members Bob Benke, Mike Donohue, Geoff Hollimon and <br /> Judith Lamp. Civil Service Commissioner Ory Kraus had also been invited to attend to <br /> meet the new Commissioners and participate in the tour. <br /> Commissioners then agreed to amend the agenda. They agreed to have a discussion on <br /> the recent Human Rights Subcommittee activity and a Council Report from Council <br /> Member Burg. The meeting would then be adjourned and interested members could then <br /> participate in the tour of the Public Safety Center. <br /> Department Reports <br /> Human Rights <br /> Director Jacobson gave an update/overview of the reported bias crime. The victim had <br /> reported on April 9th that an unknown suspect had carved a racial epithet into the door of <br /> his apartment located at 1050 Thorndale Ave. Further, the victim is an African American <br /> and believed that this crime was committed due to his race. As part of Public Safety <br /> protocol, an Officer followed up with the victim in this incident. The victim was offered <br /> the opportunity to meet with the Public Safety Commission's Human Rights <br /> Subcommittee. The victim asked for and received that opportunity. Director Jacobson <br /> also explained the ongoing criminal and civil issues surrounding the victim. <br /> Human Rights Subcommittee Members Becky Kroll and Tish Woods explained and <br /> described their meeting with the victim which occurred at his home on May 10, 2011. <br /> The victim had reported concerns with being the victim of a bias crime as well as <br /> concerns regarding physical conditions at his apartment and difficult relationships with <br /> other tenants and management.
