Approval of the Civil Service Commission minutes from December 8,2011. Special Order of Business Special Order of 1. "State of the District" presentation from Dan Hoverman, Superintendant of Mounds Business View School District 621. State of the District presentation,Mounds View School District Superintendant Dan Hoverman introduced School Board Chairperson Jon Tynjala and School 621. Board Member Mane Jo Sager. Mr. Hoverman and Tynjala shared the district's mission and vision statements. Information was given related to changes in demographics, educational equity, ACT trends, enrollment patterns and future academic ventures including STEAM and Early College. The district is intentional in providing students opportunities to pursue post secondary options. The Early College program in addition to providing all Juniors the opportunity to take the ACT test at no cost- at their high school will help many students achieve post secondary success. It was reported that US News and World Report has ranked both Irondale and Mounds View High Schools in the "silver" category. The middle schools in the district will be implementing STEAM in the fall of 2012; an initiative that now includes the various arts, along with science, technology, engineering and math. Edgewood Middle School will offer a STEAM magnet program as well. Irondale High school will offer Early College for the 2012-2013 academic year; providing an opportunity for students to earn an AA degree while still enrolled in high school. Students will complete college coursework while remaining at Irondale, instructed by Irondale teachers. It is anticipated that Mounds View High School will offer Early College in the 2013-2014 academic year. Superintendant Hoverman reported that students enrolled in an early college course must earn a letter grade C to receive college credit; a letter grade D would be required to earn a high school passing grade. Councilmember Bauman asked if the district will continue to offer PSEO (post secondary education option). Mr. Hoverman explained PSEO and Early College fall under the same program, and both options will be offered. Councilmember Samuelson expressed her gratitude to the school district, community and the many parent volunteers in the district. Councilmember Burg questioned how ACT test funding will be continued in the event that the MVEA can no longer offer financial support. Mr. Hoverman explained there is a contingency fund to continue annual funding of$40,000 to provide all students to participate in ACT testing. Superintendent Hoverman expressed gratitude to the City of New Brighton,Northwest Youth &Family Services and Peacemakers for their continued support.
