Agenda Section: V I I I-4
CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON
Report Number: 9 6-2 2 9-
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
Report Date:_ 10/3/96
ITEM DESCRIPTION: AUTHORIZATION TO PURCHASE AND INSTALL ADDITIONAL NETTING AT
DRIVING RANGE
DEPT. HEAD'S APPROVAL: N/A
MANAGER'S REVIEW/RECOMMENDATION:
No comments to supplement this report Comments below/attached
EXPLANATION/SUMMARY (attach supplemental sheets as necessary):
Brighton Crossroads Driving Range has not performed up to expectations for the past two years. There are
several factors contributing to the reduced profitability of the range; the addition of four new ranges within ten
miles or less has had a great impact and wet cool springs in 1995 and 1996 have reduced income significantly.
Even with the reduced income, the Driving Range will break even in 1996. While that does not fulfill our
expectations, it still provides an additional recreational opportunity for many New Brighton area residents.
Over 21,000 buckets of ball were sold in 1996. In addition, the Range is repaying the City for its development
Wsts; $15,100.00 in 1997. The Driving Range supervisor is on loan from the Parks Department having a
tion of his wages charged to the Range saves the general fund approximately $8,000.00 annually.
Since its inception, the Driving Range has caused a major inconvenience to Dahlke Trailer. It is not unusual
for more than a hundred balls to land on Dahlke's property on a single day if the wind is blowing from the
north or if we have a lot of "heavy hitters" on the Range. This problem causes concern for both personnel and
equipment on the Dahlke site.
The recommended solution, which is agreeable to both Dahlke Trailer and City staff is to erect an additional
screen on Dahlke's property. It is expected that this screen would intercept at least 90% of the balls now
entering the property on the fly. The cost of this screen is $3,000 for poles and fabric. If Council authorizes
the purchase, the poles would be installed this fall and the fabric in the spring.
Funds are available in the 1996 budget.
Recommendation
To authorize purchase of poles and netting for the Driving Range in the amount of$3,000.00.
9 Maurice H.
