• Mayor Robert Benke September 29, 1996
City of New Brighton
803 5th Ave NW
New Brighton, MN 55112
Dear Mayor Benke:
The New Brighton Soccer Club has had some difficulty in getting a regulation soccer
field in the city. I am not sure of the reason, but there are certainly competing
interests for limited athletic facilities. That soccer should have such a difficult time,
however, surprises me. The popularity of the sport has been growing by leaps and
bounds with the K-12 set for fifteen years in the City, and is the current sport of choice
for a majority of our youth.
The popularity of the women's team at the Olympics, of Major League Soccer in many
cities, and of the Minnesota Thunder is no coincidence. I have been coaching youth
soccer for nine seasons, and can verify the interest of the youth in the sport. You too
may have a relative under 17. If so, the chances are good that they are involved in
youth soccer. In the New Brighton Soccer Club I have done a hand count, and come
up with almost a thousand active participants. Yes, almost 1 out of every 20 New
. Brighton residents is active in soccer.
It is for this reason that I would like to thank you for your role in providing a regulation
soccer field at Driftwood Park. Your positive action on October 8, 1996 will provide a
field for the hundreds of New Brighton youth that participate in soccer. The field will
be well used, and appreciated. ,
Yours Truly, 1,/ , k_ `L
John Gulliver
942 Forestda e Road
