As you are aware, we have no city regulation soccer fields despite having
over 500 New Brighton youth in the soccer program. The creation of a regulation
soccer field at Driftwood Park is a major step in the right direction.
This is my fourth year of coaching a group of New Brighton girls who are 12 and 13
years old. They have become one of the better teams in the state and love to play
soccer. We had a game on September 8 against Wayzata. The only near regulation
field we have this Fall is in the baseball outfield at Irondale (this field is only available
in the Fall when baseball is over). The field is in bad shape and looks even worse.
When the Wayzata team got to the field, their players said loud enough for our girls to
hear, "Wait until New Brighton plays us at Wayzata, we'll show them what a real
soccer field looks like." It's unfortunate our girls are made to feel inferior because we
don't provide them decent facilities. We did, however, beat Wayzata 3-0.
In your State of the City address, you set a goal to add soccer fields in New Brighton.
The creation of a regulation soccer field at Driftwood Park would add to your long track
record of meeting your goals. Thank you very much for your support. If you have any
questions, please call me at 636-9917.
Very truly yours,
Steven R. Zenz
