The original cost with taxes of
#984 (including truck& vacuum unit) was $96,270. The replacement cost of the vacuum unit including trade-in
is $124,934.
Explanation: The purpose of this item is to obtain Council authorization for the purchase of a 2012 Ringomatic
1300 VacExtreme for the Public Works Department to replace an existing 15-year old truck mounted VersaVac
Inductor purchased in 1997. In simple terms, we are purchasing a truck mounted air conveyance vacuum unit
which is a very large and powerful"wet-vac". A picture of the previous unit is attached to this report.
This truck mounted vacuum unit has multiple capabilities. It is used for cleaning sand and debris from sanitary
sewers, lift stations, storm sewers and catch basins, and sludge from the water treatment plant sumps. It is used
on water main breaks to vacuum large amounts of mud and water that normal trash pumps cannot handle. It also
has a spray wand (3500 psi) and a potholing tool mounted on a suction tube. The potholing tool allows Public
Works to safely excavate around existing utilities with out using a backhoe.
A new truck and vacuum unit was scheduled to be purchased in 2012; but, since the existing truck& chassis are
in decent shape, it did not warrant replacing the vehicle, resulting in a savings of over$140,000. The vacuum unit
will be mounted on the existing 1998 Ford chassis. The chassis will be lengthened to accommodate this new
vacuum unit. This work is included in the price for this unit. The existing vacuum unit has served Public Works
well, but after 15 years of use, it is worn out. There have been many welding repairs on it as the abrasives that
pass through it have eventually taken their toll. The pump is getting weak, it has to be either rebuilt or replaced at
a big cost. This vehicle and vacuum unit is scheduled for replacement on a fifteen-year cycle.
Grant M.
