o <br /> 1� Report Number 12-161 <br /> Agenda Section VI-8 <br /> the city that works for you Council Meeting Date July 10, 2012 <br /> REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION: CONSIDERATION OF RESOLUTION ORDERING THE <br /> INSTALLATION OF YIELD SIGNS ON THE NORTH AND SOUTH LEGS OF THE <br /> INTERSECTION OF HIGHVIEW DRIVE AND 12TH STREET NW. <br /> DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: ( w <br /> CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL: tat, 42 <br /> 7 /� <br /> No comments to supplement this report (,_ om ents attached <br /> Recommendation: Accept the 12th Street NW and Highview Drive Traffic Study and approve the <br /> attached Resolution ordering the installation of yield signs on the north and south legs of the intersection <br /> of Highview Drive and 12th Street NW. <br /> Legislative History: On September 13, 2011, the City Council received a neighborhood petition and <br /> referred the traffic concerns to the Public Safety Commission(PSC). <br /> On June 25, 2012, the Public Safety Commission held a public hearing to discuss traffic related concerns <br /> on 12th Street NW and Highview Drive. All regulatory signs must be approved by Resolution of the City <br /> Council. <br /> Financial Impact: N/A <br /> Explanation: The City received a neighborhood petition dated August 2, 2011 from various residents <br /> located along 12th Avenue NW near 4th Street NW. In summary, the petition states the following <br /> concerns and request written responses and action to the correct the existing traffic situation: <br /> 1. The petition states limited visibility, and higher speeds based on roadway grades are limiting the <br /> reaction times of drivers at the uncontrolled intersection. <br /> 2. The petition requests that additional signage be added at north and south legs to improve safety. <br /> This item was presented to the Public Safety Commission by the Director of Public Works. At the <br /> conclusion of the Public Hearing, the Public Safety Commission passed a motion recommending to the <br /> City Council the following: <br /> 1. Install yield signs on the north and south legs of Highview Drive and 12th Street NW. <br /> 2. Staff shall work with the residents of this intersection to trim trees and improve sight lines where <br /> possible. <br /> The items included in this motion are considered non-controversial and generally accepted as a positive <br /> response to the neighborhood's concerns.
