• Report Number 12-248
of
BRIGbilIZIEW HT Agenda Section VI-4
the city that works for you Council Meeting Date October 23, 2012
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: AUTHORIZATION TO INSTALL A SPEED LIMIT LED DRIVER
FEEDBACK SIGN ALONG 10TH STREET NW NEAR THE OFF-RAMP OF EASTBOUND I-
694.
DEPARTMENT HEAD'S APPROVAL: C,MJ
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report Comments attached
Recommendation: Authorize the placement o a Speed Limit LED Driver Feedback Sign along 10th
Street NW near the off-ramp of eastbound I-694 and accept the low quote from Killmer Electric Co., Inc.
in the amount of$4,680 for the installation of this sign.
Legislative History: N/A
Financial Impact: Two quotes for the electrical installation work were solicited:
Killmer Electric: $4,680
Aid Electric: $4,950
These quotes include the conduit, wire, feed point hook-up, electrical meter, the traffic mounting pole for
the signs, and all other work necessary to install the Driver Feedback Sign.
Explanation: Driver Feedback Signs offer an innovative traffic calming and roadway safety solution to
vehicle speed management problems. The Driver Feedback Sign is a fully self-contained, variable
message sign. The sign's LED display provides "real-time speed" to drivers within the sign's radar
detection zone. If the vehicle speed exceeds the programmed speed limit, LEDs will flash to alert the
driver of the speed violation.
The Driver Feedback Sign in combination with a passive sign, which posts a regulatory speed, is an
effective traffic calming tool designed to help reduce roadway speeds. Vehicles are exiting the interstate
at high speeds (60 mph) and entering onto loth Street which is posted at 30 mph. Public safety is
increased when roadway speeds are reduced. It is proposed to install the sign along 10th Street NW near
the off-ramp of eastbound 1-694 as shown on the attached drawing.
Costs and Funding: Driver Feedback Sign was previously purchased with budgeted funds from the
crime watch account to help with neighborhood speed concerns at a cost of $3,414. The cost of the
installation of this sign in the amount of$4,680 will come from Fund 422, Contract Maintenance.
dt4Wyll'fft,11(.
Director of Public Works
Attachment
Location Map
Killmer Proposal
