Lotter, City Manager
From: Andre Barte, IT Administrator
Subject: Work Session Discussion- Discuss the Potential Purchase of
Twelve Tablets for City Councilmembers, City Manager,
and Department Directors
Date: September 20, 2012
City Council Worksession Discussion-
Discuss the potential purchase of twelve Tablets for the New Brighton City
Councilmembers, City Manager, and department directors in an amount not to exceed
$9,000 under the National Joint Powers Alliance State contract from CDWG.
History:
The Information Technology Department was given the task of obtaining price quotes
from the State of Minnesota Government purchasing contract for purchasing twelve
Tablets that would be utilized by the City Council, City Manager, and department
directors for City related business. The Tablets would allow councilmembers and
assigned city staff to view meeting agenda packets in-lieu of paper council packets.
Movement to this form of paperless council packet viewing by Councilmembers and
staff will save the City time and money in the following ways:
• Staff time in prepping and printing packets for council members and City staff;
• Staff and vehicle usage in delivering the packets;
• Less wear-and-tear on the City's printers;
• Less paper used in the printing of City Council packets.
The projected cost for purchasing the new tablets is the following:
• Twelve Lenovo Tablets with cellular service at $450 (projected cost) each;
• Twelve Lenovo Keyboard cases for tablet at $100 each.
IT Staff was recently notified by our vendor that the Tablet technology that the City was
about to purchase is scheduled to be discontinued and a newer model of Tablets will be
available on the market by mid-October to late November. The Tablet product was
discontinued due to the migration over to the Window 8 operating system. The proposed
purchase would be funded out of the IT Department Capital Replacement Fund.
I:\COUNCIL\REPORTS\2012\Admin\Work Session Discussion-Purchase of I-Pads for City Councilmembers-Sept 25,2012(2).doc
