g City of <br /> 44% <br /> GH1DN <br /> the city that works for you <br /> Council Worksession <br /> October 9, 2012 <br /> Present: Mayor Dave Jacobsen <br /> Councilmember Mary Burg <br /> Councilmember Paul Jacobsen <br /> Councilmember Char Samuelson <br /> Councilmember Gina Bauman <br /> Absent: None <br /> Staff in Attendance: Assistant to the City Manager Schawn Johnson <br /> Director of Public Safety Bob Jacobson <br /> Deputy Director of Public Safety Tony Paetznick <br /> Guests Present: Commander Rich Clar Ramsey County Crime Enforcement Team <br /> The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm <br /> Discussion of Drug Task Force Officer <br /> Director of Public Safety Jacobson introduced the item, noting that a current officer would be assigned to the <br /> Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team if approved by the City Council. Deputy Director of Public <br /> Safety Tony Paetznick reported that over the last five years, there have been nearly 600 drug related arrests in <br /> New Brighton. <br /> Commander Rich Clark introduced himself, and explained the mission of the Ramsey County Violent Crime <br /> Enforcement Team to the City Council. A power point presentation regarding the Violent Crime Enforcement <br /> team was also presented to the City Council. Mr. Clark indicated that Officers who participate receive valuable <br /> specialized training that can be brought back and shared with the entire department. It was also reported that <br /> the Task Force can serve as a valuable resource for New Brighton as needed. <br /> Mayor Jacobsen shared his frustration with the youth involvement in drugs. Mr. Clark indicated that their <br /> objective is to remove the source, as well as implement an educational component. <br /> Councilmember Samuelson asked about the DARE Program. Director Jacobson responded that the Mounds <br /> View School District chose not to fund the DARE program a few years ago. Jacobson stated that this program <br /> may be beneficial in providing educational programs in the schools. <br /> Councilmember Bauman asked how long of a commitment is expected. Mr. Clark stated that typically it is a 2-4 <br /> year assignment,but that is up to the participating City. Director Jacobson reported that there has been an <br /> increase in drug activity in New Brighton, and the intent is to put a stop to this before things get worse. <br /> Councilmember Bauman asked if the problem is being addressed in the schools. Director Jacobson stated the <br /> majority of suspects are middle aged, violent offenders. Mr. Clark reported that their goal is to remove the drug <br /> suppliers in the area. <br /> 1 <br />
