field or amenity? That would help us make a recommendation for what
goes on in New Brighton Exchange.
• Director Breuer stated we could work with our GIS staff and Engineering
staff to help with this.
• A 300/325' ball field would not fit at Vermont
• One of the issues was parking. There could be angled parking.
• When people come to the soccer games at Vermont, they generally park
on the north side.
• Once we add in all of the Parks and Recreation use for games and
practices, there really isn't much time open on any soccer or ball field.
• It would be nice to get a field in the New Brighton Exchange that is
regulation size, has drainage and the right soil and everything the way we
need it.
• The Commission agreed that it would be nice to have our Engineering
staff overlay a soccer and lacrosse field at the New Brighton Exchange
North Park.
• It would be difficult to play both lacrosse and soccer on the same field.
There is a size difference maybe in the width — soccer may be 10 ft. wider.
The other difference is that the goals are different. You would have to
have goals that you can move in and out. The soccer goals are huge and
need to be anchored down so they don't fall on anyone. Lacrosse goals
are smaller and lighter.
• The youth football program at Freedom is run through an athletic
association. The association rents the field. It is not a New Brighton
program.
• The flyer announcing the Public Forum went out to The View. A press
release has been written, but has not gone out yet. The Public Forum
information will be posted on the City's web page, it was on the Town Hall
meeting program and it will go out with the City's utility bills which will hit
1/3 of the homes. It will also go in our Parks and Recreation e-Newsletter
update. We did not do school flyers at the schools. The Commission was
given copies to distribute to neighbors. The 1/3 flyer is also what we will
have available at the Town Hall meeting.
Chair Frischman felt that what the Commission has taken away from tonight is
that it would be beneficial to look at current park usage. See if the fields might
have a park better suited for a different field usage with the idea that it would help
us determine what would be recommended for the New Brighton Exchange.
Director Breuer said what she heard is that the Commission would like to do a
large soccer field overlay and a lacrosse field overlay at Vermont Park.
Chair Frischman said she felt Driftwood is a good field that may be better utilized
for something else. Commissioner Lundberg said we would like to look at more
than one park to see what would hold a 325' ball field.
VI. New Business
None
4
