D. Public Safety/Homeland Security Update <br /> Director Jacobson noted Life Saving Awards will be presented at the March 26th Council <br /> meeting. All Public Safety Commissioners are welcome to attend. <br /> On March 8th, the Police Division Annual Meeting was held. The following awards were <br /> presented: <br /> • Special Commendation award— Sgt. Steven Moore—for the safe arrest of a local armed <br /> serial robber. <br /> • Commendation award—Officer Thomas Griffin—for coordinating a Town Hall meeting <br /> at Irondale High School featuring national, state and local dignitaries. <br /> • Commendation award—Officer Theodore Layton—for affecting the safe arrest of a <br /> repeat offender. <br /> • Letter of Commendation—Sergeant Mitchell Singer, Detective Edward Sypniewski III, <br /> Officer Theodore Layton, Officer Scott Kingslien and Officer Thomas Nerison—for <br /> quickly locating and safely apprehending four dangerous suspects who robbed the Liquor <br /> Barrel. <br /> • 2012 Traffic Safety Officer of the Year award—Officer Dustin Bengtson <br /> • 2012 Police Officer of the Year award—Of er Theodore Layton <br /> Director Jacobson noted there was an apartment fire at Garden View Apartments on March 21st <br /> at approximately 11:00 pm. There were no injuries and investigation continues to try to <br /> determine the cause of the fire. There was significant damage to 4 apartment units. <br /> Council LiaisonNr- <br /> A. Council Report <br /> Council Member Samuelson noted Council members attended a League training which was very <br /> good. City staff continues to work on negotiations for housing blocks in the New Brighton <br /> Exchange development. <br /> Council Member Samuelson reported if anyone is interested in being on a commission, this is the <br /> time to apply. <br /> Commissioner Bredenbeck reported he will not reapply for the Public Safety Commission. He <br /> stated Director Jacobson does an excellent job; his position calls on a lot of executive abilities, <br /> which he has. The Public Safety organization is great and well run and deserves a lot of support. <br /> Commissioner Bredenbeck stated it has been a pleasure to be on this commission and it has been <br /> very interesting; he has learned a lot. He leaves this commission with a little bit of regret and <br /> appreciates getting to know all of you. <br /> Director Jacobson reported Commissioner Hollimon and Commissioner Woods with both be <br /> reappointed. The Public Safety Commission will be at 9 members until this spot is filled. <br /> Council Member Samuelson reported she will be going to the Parks, Recreation and <br /> Environmental Commission (PREC) as the council liaison. Council Member Bauman will be the <br /> next liaison for the Public Safety Commission. <br />
