having those fields in Hansen that have been a challenge in
maintaining, or would the recommendation be to include them as
current field use.
Commissioner Fields stated if we were not going to eliminate both; we
could look at a dog park as a replacement. That seems to be the
location people would go to that have animals and it would eliminate
those people using the hockey rink or tennis courts which are not
designated for that use.
Commissioner Lundberg stated she did not disagree that one of the
Hansen fields could be eliminated, but she believes there would need
to be further discussion around that item as to what would actually go
in the area. Commissioner Lundberg agrees that having the lacrosse
and ball field is what was most useful in that park. Also there was
discussion about possibly making improvements to Driftwood Park
soccer field. Commissioner Lundberg feels it would be helpful to
make improvements on existing fields and then decide what was most
needed at North Park. Commissioner Lundberg felt a ball field and
lacrosse field is what is needed.
Commissioner Nguyen suggested taking the two hockey rink boards
down at Hansen and making that area a soccer field.
Parks Superintendent Wolla stated that it would be a very small field.
The rinks are also in a low area which makes them very wet. The
hockey boards are permanent right now. If it were a soccer field, the
boards would need to be removable.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein inquired if the housing in that area
would go in first, or if the park would be developed first. Assistant
Director Jason West felt that the housing would go in first. Although
he has heard that some communities are building the park first and
then the housing goes in.
Chair Frischman stated that the Public Forum last month with resident
comments is what will drive this Commission's recommendation to the
Council.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein suggested that the lacrosse field go in
the North Park, because lacrosse is hot right now. She also liked the
idea of having the Rice Creek Boat Club there. It would be a nice way
to open up the lake and get more people interested in that kind of
activity.
Commissioner Lundberg stated the Boat Club was talking about using
a different area that was closer to the boat launch area.
Commissioner Lundberg also felt that would be neat to find a way to
work that in.
2
