Approved
technology based world where they were losing farming. She stated children did not understand farming and it was
important they understood it.
Steve Flom, 251 14th Avenue, stated he was not advocating one way or the other. He stated he did not recall urban
farming being a right in the Constitution of the United States so he wanted the terminology to be done correctly. He
stated this was not a right. It was a urban area. He stated life happens and urban area grew up, but what was allowed 50
years ago should not be allowed now. He stated it was about the rights of the community and not the rights of the
individual, other than what was in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He stated it was what the community was
looking for; what the community wants and what the community was going to agree to abide by. He stated if you lived in
a condominium, people had to abide by the rules and it was the community that made the rules and not an individual.
Pam Anderson, Center City, stated her in -laws live in New Brighton and she has been following the process. She stated
as she was listening to the comments, they were a Task Force and were supposed to listen to the facts, but she heard a lot
of emotion and being constrained by thoughts that one person thinks this and one person thinks that, but if they want to do
something with their property they needed to think about their neighbors also. It was not always about what you wanted
to do, but you are constrained by where you are. She stated her brother lived in Madison, Wisconsin and he had a garden
on his land, but he also had a community garden lot. She recommended they think out of the box to put in a community
chicken area for those who wanted multiple fowl and multiple sizes of coops.
Jamie Newelen, Fridley, states where he grew up in in Minneapolis the houses and lots were small and when he moved to
Fridley he learned they could garden and he does garden. He also has lived in an apartment building and was allowed to
garden. He stated he had to take his kids two and a half hours out of the City to see a farm animal. He believed this was a
right as the rights said, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Giving the right to farm gives the right to eat as well as
the pursuit of happiness as it makes people happy and he does not believe the City should take away the right to choose.
He stated it was up to the neighbors to communicate with each other if there were problems or issues.
Chair Howard asked if there were any other comments. He reminded everyone that there were comment sheets which
would be accepted until January 23.
Code Enforcement Supervisor stated there was information on the website. He stated the next meeting would be held on
January 23 at City Hall in the conference room.
Announcements
(A) Written comments will be accepted
Chair Howard stated written comments would be accepted until January 23.
(B) Future UFTF meetings to be held at New Brighton City Hall lower level conference room
Chair Howard stated future meetings would be held at the City Hall.
Meeting adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
2
