John Deere 6125R Tractor Council Report
April 22, 2014
Several years ago we modified our existing front -end loader and created a route to plow out some of the
more difficult north end cul -de -sacs. The front -end loader plows cul -de -sacs more efficiently that the
large trucks; however, we only have one front -end loader with 26 cul -de -sacs on its route.
For the 2012 -2013 snow season, we rented a John Deere tractor to plow out the majority of the south side
New Brighton cul -de -sacs. The tractor had a specialized plow mounted to the front and it was able to
plow out nearly 40 cul -de -sacs. The tractor was very efficient and we ended up purchasing a similar style
tractor in 2013 for the 2013 -2014 snow season.
The tractor purchased in 2013 got the job done; however, there were a few safety concerns that were
expressed by the driver that would be addressed by this proposed upgrade. The tractor, because of the
manual type of transmission, required a lot of skill and training to operate. When operating this type of
equipment, it is imperative the snow plow operator has his /her full attention to the outside environs, and
not be thinking about shifting gears or killing the engine when pushing a heavy snow bank back. The
new tractor will have an automatic style transmission. Last, the machine tended to slip /slide when
pushing snow heavier snow events. The new tractor will have better road tires which will allow better
plowing, steering and ride down the road.
This John Deere tractor will also be able to operate a mowing flail for use during the summer months.
This vehicle will be used for both plowing cul -de -sacs and mowing boulevards. This vehicle will be
scheduled for replacement on a 12 -year cycle.
7d- 4t -
Grant M.
