i; city of
VilA
MCI
ihe city that works for yoi
Memo
To: Janice Gundlach, City Planner
From: Sandy Breuer, Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: Signage Issues - Subway
Date: October 12, 2012
The Parks and Recreation Department is excited about the opportunity for
Subway to open a franchise operation within the New Brighton Community
Center(NBCC). Staff is very supportive of this kiosk type restaurant. The
Subway kiosk will maximize available space and provide foodservice capabilities.
In 2011, the NBCC recorded 386,000 visitors. The Eagles Nest at the NBCC is a
regional draw. On Saturdays during the busiest months of the year the NBCC
hosts up to 20 birthday parties. With the addition of the Ramsey County Library,
an additional 100,000 visitors have entered the facility. A food establishment at
the NBCC would be a welcomed addition to our already established customer
base and their guests.
Parks and Recreation staff are negotiating a lease agreement with Subway. One
of the terms in the current draft of the lease allows Subway to be included in the
monument signs at NBCC. The intent is to include the Subway logo on these
signs. Inclusion of the logo does not conform to the current Civic Campus
Comprehensive Sign Plan. Parks and Recreation staff would like to recommend
the following changes to the Civic Campus Comprehensive Sign Plan to allow for
the Subway logo to be placed on the signage.
Parks and Recreation Staff recommend that the Civic Comprehensive Sign
Policy be amended to allow logos to be included on the monument signs.
Parks and Recreation does not recommend amending the policy to allow color on
the monument signs.
The Parks and Recreation Director must approve all final plans and look of
exterior sign changes that take place at the New Brighton Community Center.
Parks and Recreation staff recommends the Civic Comprehensive Sign Policy to
be amended to state (red type font denotes changes):
O:ILEASB SPACE SUBWAYtSubway at NBCC Planning Commission Memo-Signage dot
