Yr
DREHIO V
the city that *orks k r you
Memo
To: Janice Gundlach, City Planner
Sandy Breuer, Director of Parks and Recreation
From: Jason T. West, Assistant Director of
Parks and Recreation
Subject: Fencing between Brightwood Hills Golf Course and
Grace Point Church
Date: July 8, 2011
It has come to our attention that Grace Point Church wishes to install a 12 foot
fence on their property that abuts Brightwood Hills Golf Course to help prevent
golf balls going onto their property. The New Brighton Parks and Recreation
Department supports Grace Point Church's efforts to help alleviate this issue.
To help mitigate this problem, the New Brighton Parks and Recreation
Department installed a netting system within the trees between Brightwood Hills
Golf Course and Grace Point Church sometime in the mid to late 1990's. That
netting was approximately 6 feet off the ground and was about 6-8 feet tall and
approximately 50 feet long. The netting was from previous material the Parks
Division had so cost was minimal and the investment was approximately $100-
$200 dollars for hardware and time. The department believes that it was at the
church's request to install this netting.
Over time this netting deteriorated. To further mitigate this issue, New Brighton
Parks and Department installed a second net in approximately April 2011. The
new netting starts at the top of the existing 4 foot fence and is approximately 10
feet tall, for a total height of about 14 feet and is approximately 60 feet in length.
The netting was taken from the hockey rink at Totem Pole Park. It took 2 park
employees about 6 hours to install.
Over a decade, the New Brighton Parks and Recreation Department has tried to
help alleviate the golf balls going onto Grace Point Church's parking lot. There is
an understanding that any property that is adjacent to a golf course may have
occasional golf balls on their property. Again, the New Brighton Parks and
Recreation Department is in full support of Grace Point Church's efforts with their
recommended improvement.
