1
Jones Lake Master Plan
New Brighton, Minnesota
Concept Summary
Introduction
Jones Lake has the opportunity to become a
valuable addition to the New Brighton Park
and trail system. The unique development
mix in the Jones Lake area allows the site to
accommodate a variety of uses including a
lunch spot for neighboring industrial
workers, a weekend getaway path system,
and a secluded spot for those seeking
solitude and nature in the city. With
appropriate trail design, picnic nodes,
parking access and interpretation, Jones
Lake can serve all these functions and more.

User Needs
Trails are the most popular recreation
facility with most recreation users. With
light industry bounding Jones Lake on the
north and additional office space to the
south and east, the new trail and node
system can serve as the perfect lunch or
break location. The trail can connect with
the industrial sites and allow for daily walks
and escapes. A small parking lot facing the
lake can also accommodate the “park and
lunch” idea.

The residential areas on the west side of
Jones Lake guarantee a strong family
influence on the paths during the week as
well as on the weekend. An opportunity also
exists to open up an existing private play
area and picnic shelter for public use with
City improvements.

Additionally, a future comprehensive trail
linking Jones Lake to Hanson Park can
enhance both parks and the neighborhood.

Project Goals
1. Provide trail connections within
Jones Lake and beyond.

2. Identify land acquisition needs,
shared use opportunities and
public/private partnerships.

3. Provide recreation opportunities for
both the lunch-break user and the
evening/weekend user.

4. Improve stormwater control
elements and the cleansing properties
of the wetland. Emphasize and
increase the quantity of wetland
plants and appropriate stormwater
utilities that will promote the
removal of sediment and
contaminants from water.

5. Provide interpretive signs to promote
awareness of the water systems
within New Brighton and beyond.

6. Enhance the existing residential and
commercial neighborhoods through
provision of recreation opportunities.

Opportunities and Constraints

Opportunities:

Interpretation

The unique combination of the water tower,
stormwater pond and the wetland on the site
offers the opportunity to provide awareness
about the natural water cycle and the unique
water system of New Brighton.
