Community Assets &
Development Department

MEMORANDUM

DATE: February 12, 2015

TO: Economic Development Commission

FROM: Janice Gundlach, Asst. Director of Community Assets &
Development/Planning Director

SUBJECT: February 18, 2015 EDC Agenda

The goal of February’s meeting is to build consensus around 2-3 projects or initiatives the
Commission would like to incorporate into your 2015 Work Plan. These topics would
be presented to the City Council at the joint EDC/City Council meeting that is tentatively
scheduled for March 18, 2015. The purpose of the joint meeting is for the Council to
provide direction to the EDC on the contents of your work plan.

Staff and the Chair will provide a short presentation to the Commission during the
meeting (draft slides are attached). Several broader topics will be discussed, along with
specific project examples. Ultimately, the Commission should refine where you would
like economic development efforts to be focused, beyond New Brighton Exchange.

Staff also wants to caution there is additional work to be done in New Brighton
Exchange. An updated Work Plan is attached, with several New Brighton Exchange
tasks/projects identified.

In an effort to give some background and/or examples of economic development efforts
going on in the state and/or surrounding communities, staff has included several pieces of
information, including program specifics by the City of Roseville, City of Coon Rapids,
and DEED, annual reports & newsletters from The Economic Development Association
of Minnesota, and a presentation called “Keeping your City Competitive” that was given
last week at Ehler’s Annual Public Finance Seminar.

Depending on specific areas of interest by the Commission, more information can be
gathered for a more in-depth discussion at future meetings.

Staff looks forward to a good discussion!
