Commissioner Danger questioned what the current setbacks were for a shed. Planning Director Gundlach <br />reported sheds could be located five feet from the property line. <br />Commissioner McPherson did not particularly like the language within the shoreland setback but supported the <br />ordinance. He recommended that the shoreland ordinance move forward. <br />Commissioner Danger wanted to see lakeshore owner's property values protected. He believed that privacy <br />fences running all the way to the 50 foot shoreland setback would diminish property values while also reducing <br />view sheds. He suggested that privacy fences only be allowed half the distance from the structure to the <br />ordinary high water mark. <br />Molly Patterson -Lundgren commented that another option for the Commission to consider would be to not <br />allow fences that block the view. <br />Commissioner McPherson discussed how his lot has been impacted due to the fact his neighbor has planted <br />trees all along the property line. He recommended the Commission support the proposed Ordinance as it was in <br />alignment with neighboring communities. He suggested that fencing be required to be opaque. He encouraged <br />the City to maintain the viability of the property values for those that live around a lake. <br />The Commission discussed the effect of an average lakeshore setback. <br />Planning Director Gundlach explained that staff could explore the potential of an average lakeshore setback and <br />could report back to the Commission next month with how many lakeshore properties would be impacted. She <br />discussed how the average lakeshore setback could lead to numerous nonconformities and additional variance <br />requests. <br />Commissioner Danger provided comment on the depth of the lots on Long Lake. Given this fact, he stated he <br />would withdraw his request and recommended that the shoreland ordinance proceed as proposed by staff. He <br />appreciated staff's efforts. <br />Chairperson Howard questioned the next steps for the shoreland ordinance. Planning Director Gundlach <br />reviewed the proposed timeline for the ordinance. She indicated an Open House would be held for shoreland <br />property owners and input would be taken from the community prior to the City holding a public hearing at a <br />future Planning Commission meeting. <br />Planning Director Gundlach asked if the Commission was in favor of allowing play structures within the 50 foot <br />setback. <br />Commissioner McPherson believed it was reasonable to have play structures at least 50 feet from the shoreland <br />setback. <br />Planning Director Gundlach thanked the Commission for their input and stated she would take their comments <br />into consideration as she revised the shoreland ordinance in the coming weeks. <br />N <br />
