ORDINANCE NO. 839 <br />STATE OF MINNESOTA <br />COUNTY OF RAMSEY <br />CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE YEAR OF CITY ELECTIONS; <br />AMENDING CITY CODE, SECTION 2-16 <br />THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON ORDAINS as follows: <br />Section 1. Legislative bindings. <br />(a) The City Council is authorized under Minnesota Statutes, section 205.07, <br />subdivision 1 to act by ordinance to change the City's general elections from <br />odd years to even years; <br />(b) The City Council may adopt one or more ordinances that are supplementary to <br />this Ordinance as it may determine are needed to implement the change in the <br />years of the City's general election; <br />(c) The City Council intends, as authorized under Minnesota Statutes, section <br />205.07, to shorten the terms of the current City Council members, by one year <br />and to lengthen the term of the Mayor by one year, to allow for an orderly <br />transition and allowing for the first even year election to take place on the first <br />Tuesday after the First Monday in November 2016; and <br />(d) The City Council determines it is in the best interests of the City and its <br />residents to change the year in which the City's general elections are held to <br />even -numbered years in order to align its elections with the State and Federal <br />elections, which will provide a cost savings to the City. <br />Section 2. Election Year. New Brighton City Code, Section 2-16 is amended by deleting the <br />stfiekei} material and adding the double underlined material as follows: <br />Sec. 2-16. Date of Regular Election. Commencing with the 1975-2016 City election, the <br />regular election for City officials shall be held annually on the first Tuesday after the first <br />Monday in November of each even -numbered year. This provision is made pursuant to <br />Minnesota Statutes, Section 205.07 <br />Section 3. Implementation. In order to provide for an orderly transition, the term of the <br />offices that were elected in November 2013 shall now expire on the first Monday of January <br />2017, requiring an election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2016. The <br />term of all the offices, including the Mayor, that were elected in November 2015 shall expire <br />on the first Monday in January 2019, requiring an election of those offices on the first Tuesday <br />after the first Monday November 2018. Following the November 2018 election, the office of <br />the Mayor shall continue to be for a two year term. The City Clerk is authorized to take all <br />4703530 KRH NE136-255 <br />
