July 29, 2014:
Mayor Jacobson and Members of the City Council:
As you are aware, last fall the City Council appointed a 9 -member citizen task force to study the
issue of urban farming. There is growing interest in this topic within our community, but little in
the way of City regulation to help guide the activities. The City Council wanted input from a
variety of stakeholders to better define the practice and whether additional City oversight was
needed.
After nearly 8 months of study and research, many meetings (including a well -attended public
forum in November) and robust discussions among the participants, I am pleased to report that
the Urban Farming Task Force (UFTF) has concluded its work. Attached is a copy of the final
report that has been reviewed and approved by the group.
It is my understanding in talking with staff, that the City Council will receive this report in their
weekly memo and time will be set aside for me to make a short presentation at a regular meeting
later this month or in early August. I look forward to the opportunity to present the report to the
City Council.
On behalf of the UFTF I would like to thank you for the opportunity to serve our community and
to help shape important public policy.
Sincerely,
Bruce Howard, Chair
Urban Farming Task Force
