be boardwalk structures. The picnic areas
will be located in areas of more stable land.
Concept Plan Summary
The Jones Lake Park Concept Plan consists
of a 1.25 -mile loop trail around Jones Lake,
a parking lot/trail head, picnic area, rain
garden and environmental educational
signage.
The Park Concept Plan uses the landmark of
the water tower to guide the entrance to the
park. A curb cut is already in place and there
is adequate space for an access drive and
parking lot. This parking lot would serve 12
cars and would be ideal for the "park and
lunch" crowd. A picnic area and portable
toilet enclosure is proposed to be located
near the parking lot and trailhead. This is
also an ideal location to start a self -guided
interpretive loop trail that describes the
water cycle from stormwater to water tower
to user's tap.
The 1.25 mile loop trail would consist of a
paved trail along the upland edge and
sections of boardwalk along the north and
southern edges. Interpretive signs and
benches would be placed at key areas. The
creek would be crossed with the two
pedestrian bridges.
The Baptist Seminary Land (approximately
26 acres) would need to be acquired for park
and trail use. The land has an estimated year
2002 market value of $240,000. If a trail
easement could be acquired from private
property owners to the north, most of the
north section of the boardwalk could be
eliminated and replaced with a less
expensive surface trail. The total
construction could be done in phases. While
a loop is necessary for significant
recreational use, the surface could be
constructed initially in gravel and paved at a
later date.
Grant Funding Sources
State Funds:
MINNESOTA OFFICE OF
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSISTANCE
1.
