Allina staff present to recognize these awards may include
Medical Director Dr. Charlie Lick, Brian LaCroix, Bill Snoke, Jeff Czyson and Dave Matteson.
Legislative History:
New Brighton DPS has a tradition of recognizing Life Saving Awards publicly during City Council
meetings.
Explanation:
On Saturday, January 10th, 2015 at about 11:40 a.m., Mr. Matthew Lund and several of his friends were
playing their regularly scheduled game of broomball at Hazelnut Park at 3301 New Brighton Road in
Arden Hills. Mr. Lund had reportedly been playing one of his best games of broomball and was now
taking his turn playing in goal. As the broomball game continued, one fellow player, Dan Magnuson,
noted that Mr. Lund was lying on the ice and did not appear to be moving. As Mr. Lund lay motionless,
he was checked on and found he did not have a pulse and he was not breathing. Mr. Magnuson told
teammates and friends to stop playing and for someone to call 911. Another player, Peter Javorski, went
into action dialing 911 to initiate the chain of survival via emergency responders. Allina Medical and
Ramsey County Sheriff's Office personnel were advised to respond to a "man down on the ice, no pulse."
Meanwhile, friend Aaron Briggs, a personal trainer who had just recently become certified in CPR, and
Grant Dawson, took quick, decisive action. They began CPR with Mr. Briggs performing chest
compressions while Mr. Dawson began rescue breathing. Another friend, Mike Johnson, remained calm
and determined a likely need for an AED. Mr. Johnson ran to nearby Trinity Lutheran Church which was
open and had an easily accessible AED. Mr. Johnson retrieved the AED and ran back to his friend's side
at Hazelnut Park.
New Brighton Police Officer DeDominces was monitoring the radio channel and knew he was close to
this emergency call in the City of Arden Hills. Officer DeDominces volunteered to respond and arrived
about 3 1/2 minutes later and shortly after Mr. Johnson had arrived with the AED. Officer DeDominces,
who was the first emergency responder on scene, utilized the Trinity Lutheran AED on Mr. Lund who
was still not breathing nor had a pulse.
Officer DeDominces used his experience and training for these situations and directed two "shocks" with
the AED to Mr. Lund. Allina Paramedics, including Barb Schley and Kimberly Hedger, and other
emergency personnel arrived as lifesaving efforts continued. Mr. Lund later regained a pulse and began
breathing. Allina Medical transported Mr. Lund to Abbott Northwestern Hospital with Officer
DeDominces and Ramsey County Sheriff's Deputy Luke Mickelson traveling with the ambulance to
GACHIEFTouncil Reports\2015\Luod Lifesaving Awards.doc
