�� city of <br />BRIG�rPON <br />the city that works for you <br />Council Worksession <br />June 23, 2015 <br />5:00 pm <br />Present: Mayor Dave Jacobsen <br />Councilmember Gina Bauman <br />Councilmember Brian Strub <br />Councilmember Paul Jacobsen <br />Councilmember Mary Burg <br />Absent: <br />Staff in Attendance: Dean Lotter <br />Guests in Attendance: Marie McCarthy, Met Council, Dan <br />Marie McCarthy, Met Council Member for New Brighton's District <br />Marie McCarthy, Met Council representative, introduced herself to the Council and provided an overview of <br />actions taking place at the Met Council. She explained she was an advocate for the City and encouraged the <br />Council to contact her with any questions or concerns. <br />Dan , discussed the trends taking place in the metro area, along with the regional plans for the Met <br />Council. He then provided comment on the Thrive 2040 Comp Plan. He explained that numerous regional <br />meetings have been held to gain comment from the public. From these meetings, that Met Council has <br />gathered five outcomes. These five outcomes were reviewed in detail with the Council. He then discussed the <br />challenges the region was facing, such as water supply, water sustainability, energy efficiency and climate <br />change. He discussed the upcoming Comp Plan update the City would undertake. <br />Councilmember Bauman thanked the Met Council representatives for their presentation. She discussed the <br />differences between local and state government. Dan discussed the ten-year census cycle and explained how <br />this impacts State and regional planning efforts. <br />Mayor Jacobsen was interested in receiving return on investment information from the Met Council, with <br />respect to jobs, subsidies and infrastructure. He discussed how the population of New Brighton was aging in <br />place. <br />Councilmember Burg noted the City had a huge transportation problem due to the traffic backups in and <br />around New Brighton. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen encouraged Met Council to consider further bus lines through New Brighton to assist <br />its residents in reaching both Minneapolis and St. Paul via public transportation. <br />Councilmember Strub was interested in further discussing the City's bus lines. Ms. McCarthy explained that <br />transportation dollars are based greatly on population. She noted that adjustments can be made if ridership <br />could sustain a route. She indicated that she would investigate this matter further if directed by the City <br />Council. <br />
