As part
of our vision and mission, this plan states that we are committed to improving health. It further
states that the City would emphasize our parks by keeping them current, safe and serving the
community.
At the July 1, 2015 Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission (PREC) Meeting, three
vendors presented two different designs for the replacement of Totem Pole Playground. Each
vendor was given specified criteria, including a budget of $40,000, and allocated twenty minutes
to explain their design and answer any questions. At the end of the presentations PREC was
asked to rank their top three designs and staff computed the results, with Minnesota/Wisconsin
Playground getting the most point value.
In 2012, the Hansen Park Playground Structure was donated to Kids Around the World, an
Illinois -bases nonprofit that provides play structures to developing countries. Staff is currently
working with Kids Around the World to disassemble and donate the playground structure at Totem
Pole Park. The current equipment would typically be recycled and the rest sent to a landfill.
Previously, the City Attorney shared that if the City would send the equipment to a landfill and it
has no value in a sale, it could be concluded that the property could be donated.
