CPY was meeting a <br />great need through mentoring and engaging with youth in the community. As youth began to engage in CPY <br />activities, the juvenile crime rate in New Brighton and Mounds View declined. She provided comment on <br />the positive after school and summer programs offered by CPY to elementary and middle school aged <br />children in the community. She reported that CPY serves 525 youth each year offering training in life skills, <br />educational support and character building opportunities. She described how CPY was staffed and funded. <br />She was pleased to report CPY received a three-year grant from the United Way for $50,000 a year. She <br />provided comment on the numerous ways the public could get involved in CPY through the Golf Ball Drop <br />and Beach Party Gala. Ms. Stewart thanked the Council for their continued support and asked for questions <br />or comments from the Council. <br />Councilmember Strub reported his daughter participated in CPY programming throughout the summer. He <br />discussed the numerous benefits of the CPY programs and thanked Ms. Stewart for her dedication to the <br />youth in the community. He requested Ms. Stewart provide the Council with several testimonials from youth <br />that have benefited by CPY programming. Ms. Steward gave two testimonial accounts of youth that have <br />thrived because of the local programing and have gone on to graduate high school and attend college. <br />Councilmember Strub appreciated the numerous benefits that CPY offered to the community and stated he <br />supported this organization both personally and as a City Councilmember. He encouraged residents to attend <br />an upcoming CPY function as a show of support for this wonderful community asset. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen appreciated how the area surrounding Polynesian Village has changed over the <br />years. He thanked Ms. Stewart for making a difference in the City of New Brighton. He asked how <br />members of the community could get involved in CPY. Ms. Stewart noted CPY's phone and web address. <br />She discussed various volunteer opportunities available to the public at CPY. <br />Councilmember Bauman believed that every child was a gift. She questioned if CPY was making an effort to <br />improve the home life for the at risk youth in the community. Ms. Stewart commented that parents were <br />always encouraged to volunteer at CPY. She explained that family nights were a great way to encourage <br />parents to engage in CPY activities. She reported that all staff were encouraged to engage with parents in a <br />positive manner. <br />Mayor Jacobsen thanked Ms. Stewart for her contributions on behalf of the youth in the community and for <br />making New Brighton a better community. <br />2. Stockyard Days Update by President Matt Gallagher. <br />City Manager Lotter commented that it was the Council's intent to speak with a representative from <br />Stockyard Days prior to the event. This would allow the Council to have an understanding of the events that <br />were planned He reported staff reached out to Matt Gallagher, president of Stockyard Days, but <br />unfortunately, he was unable to attend this evening. <br />Consent Agenda <br />1.
