16

PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

The Parks & Recreation Department strives to enhance the quality of life for New Brighton citizens and visi-
tors through high quality services and facilities. The City believes that parks and recreation contributes to the
overall health of a community, neighborhoods and individuals. New Brighton offers park facilities and recrea-
tion programs/activities year round for residents of all ages and abilities. These services encourage healthy
lifestyles, increase property values, develop community pride, protect the environment, and relieve stress.

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for coordinating recreational activities for the community,
operating the Community Center and golf course and maintaining the City’s park system. The Parks and Rec-
reation Director is assisted by the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director, Facilities Manager, Recreation Su-
pervisors, Parks Superintendent, Golf Operations Manager, Parks Maintenance Workers, Office Assistant and
many other staff members that assist in the day-to-day operations of this department.

The City’s thirteen parks (twelve neighborhood parks and one community park), contain 205 acres of park and
open space. The parks offer playground equipment, trails, ball diamonds, soccer and football fields, disc golf,
skate boarding and climbing equipment, picnic facilities, tennis and basketball courts. The department also
operates four Neighborhood Centers (Freedom, Hansen, Totem Pole and Sunny Square). The City offers the
neighborhood centers, park fields and equipment for reservation/rental to the public.

The 70,000 square foot New Brighton Community Center is home to the Parks and Recreation Department and
is a focal point for the community. Nearly 455,000 guests visit the NBCC annually for recreation, social and
business purposes. The City also owns and operates Brightwood Hills Golf Course, a 9-hole executive par 30
course. In addition to playing a round of golf, golf leagues, golf lessons and the driving range are available to
the public.
