2

April 1, 2016

Dear Commissioner,

Congratulations on being appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve on one of the city commissions!
We appreciate your interest in serving the residents of New Brighton and hope you enjoy the experience.

City Commissions play an important role in local government operations. Policy issues and topics come up
from time to time that the Council will need input on and having advisory commissions composed of residents
is one avenue for the Council to get that support. You will be participating in meetings supported by city staff
that will influence and affect final Council decisions on a variety of issues. Depending on your commission
assignment you may weigh in on decisions affecting land use decisions, business growth and development,
expansion and maintenance of recreational infrastructure or even matters that directly affect the safety or our
residents. In other words, you will all have an impact on the quality of life in New Brighton.

In an effort to help with your transition into serving as a commissioner, city staff has assembled a packet of
information and will discuss it at an initial orientation. You will find information about the City, its organiza-
tional structure, roles and responsibilities and more. You will hear and learn about laws that govern how pub-
lic meetings can be conducted and privacy and data issues that affect you now that you are a commissioner.
When you have questions or need assistance or feel you want more training, please don’t hesitate to contact
city staff. Whether it’s the staff that directly supports your commission, the City Clerk or the City Manager,
we are all here to help! Thank you for your time and dedication to your community.

Respectfully yours,

Dean R. Lotter
City Manager
